    Verizon May Dismantle Go90

Speaking at Recode’s Code Media conference in Huntington Beach, Calif. today, Oath CEO Tim Armstrong suggested that Go90, Verizon's free mobile video app, may be dismantled. Verizon launched Go90 in late 2015 with a focus on mobile video for a millennial generation.

In response to Unilever CMO Keith Weed’s threat to Facebook and Google about cleaning up their platforms to be a more positive social media experience or lose ad revenue, Oath CEO Tim Armstrong, speaking at Recode’s Code Media conference in Huntington Beach, California today, suggested that his platform, a joint-venture of Verizon brands AOL and Yahoo, will be a much safer and more positive experience. Unilever’s complaint (as well as rival Proctor and Gamble) is that there seems to be no control over how ads are placed on Facebook and Google, with their ads often appearing opposite questionable content.

Armstrong went on to say that parent Verizon is planning on folding its Go90 mobile video service into Oath and redistributing the content thru other properties of Oath. “There’s a bunch of stuff that should be in the Huffington Post, a bunch of stuff that should be in Yahoo Sports, a bunch of stuff that should be in Yahoo Finance,” he said. “So you’ll see basically the power of Go90 and those partnerships start to get distributed at scale.”
